Just tried two of those so-called AI game generators. One can spit out art assets, the other claims to even build the level logic for you. After messing around with them, my take is: yeah, you can get a playable demo out way faster, but the gap between a demo and something you can actually ship? That part’s still a grind. The generated art has no consistent style—same character, different pose, and it goes off the rails.
You still need LoRA to lock in the style and manual inpainting to fix it. The logic side is even more obvious—the generator just gives you a template skeleton. The actual feel, the numbers, the feedback loop? All on you to polish.
What indie devs save is the grunt work of churning out the initial volume, but you don’t save any time on the polishing. And because the entry bar’s lower now, there’s a flood of samey little games. Getting yours noticed becomes the new headache. Tools let you make stuff faster, but they don’t make it any easier to survive.
