Here’s a hard truth: a lot of people have that GPU in their laptop just sitting idle, yet they’re paying monthly to generate images on someone else’s server. There’s this open-source app called Off Grid AI Desktop that lets you run SDXL and Z-Image-Turbo offline on both Mac and PC—no account, no API key, no telemetry.

The model weights stay on your own hard drive, so you don’t have to worry about the service getting taken down or throttled one day. Minimum spec is a GTX 1660 or a modern integrated GPU for running 1.5 and low-step models, but for full-resolution SDXL you’ll need at least an RTX 3060 with 8GB VRAM.

On Windows you can run it on CPU, but it’s slow—think minutes, not seconds. I’m getting older now, and I just want peace of mind. Having everything on my own machine feels solid, and I can keep generating even if the internet goes down at midnight.

The weights are on my own drive, so I don’t have to worry about the service going under. That really hit home.
