Teaching beginners ComfyUI, I'm following this order now

When I’m helping newbies get started with ComfyUI, the thing I advise against most is diving straight in and copying someone else’s workflow wiring. No matter how many wires you connect, you’ll always know how but never why. Here’s the order I lay out now:

  1. First, get clear on why you’re even using it — know its pros and cons inside out before you touch anything.
  2. Set up your install, models, and plugin directories properly and cleanly. This step is the most boring, but it saves you the most headaches down the road.
  3. Grind hard on the underlying logic of nodes and data flow. This is where you should spend the most time — once it clicks here, everything else clicks too.
  4. Practice practical modules like masking and Inpainting.
  5. Finally, hand-build a complete SDXL workflow — no looking at templates, wire it up from a blank canvas.

Do it in the wrong order and you’ll get stuck easily. Nodes are basically just breaking the image-generating process down into building blocks — understanding how to snap them together is a hundred times more useful than memorizing templates.

I’m just spoiled by templates — the moment someone else’s workflow throws a red error, all I know how to do is reinstall the plugins.

Thanks OP, appreciate the effort

Throwing checkpoints and LoRAs into the same folder, then spending forever digging around just to find one model.

The folder thing is so real, I messed up my model organization once and ended up with two copies saved.
